Easter and the end of April

I just checked back and we updated only 2 weeks ago, but I feel tons has happened!

Me and the girls on a cuddly afternoon

We finally got our kitchen together- Yay!  That was a huge relief.  No sink and counters for a few weeks is way to many weeks.

After

Before

We were able to get together with my cousin Erin, her adorable son Elian and Auntie Peggy (who Maisy just loves to bits) at Superfranks in Pleasanton.  The place is amazing.  Plenty of rooms for kids to play in safely with servers to bring you food!  It's clean and fun for all.

Erin, Elian, Maren, me, Maisy- this is the best of about 8 photos.

Maren being a big girl

Maisy is loving school!  She was able to go 3 days last week, but this week she will go only once.  She thoroughly enjoys her teachers and being with her friends.  She in no way has any separation anxiety and doesn't bat an eye when I leave.  Her teachers are very impressed with her language and communications skills.  She pretty much wants to either play in water all day or paint.  She is an avid painter!  Better at school than at home, because she isn't the most tidy painter.  Maisy is in a phase where she is having serious issues with everything she wears.  There are only about 3 Maisy approved items of clothing and they aren't for cool weather, so getting dressed these days are a bit of a struggle. We try to narrow her choices and then make her pick one.  She'll even pick something out herself, but then when she gets it on, it doesn't feel right.  She also must dress herself, which is okay, except for when she can't get the clothes on and it upsets her.  Whew-  we've been having all sorts of fun with this.  It's getting slightly better now.  We kind of just let her wear whatever- just to avoid a huge deal and we will just let her express the little fashionista inside herself!

Maisy at school with some of her classmates

It's really fun to see the girls start playing together. Maisy will run for Maren (her Mareny) if she's sad because a hug from her will make her feel better.  She says she misses Maren most when she's at school.   They love shouting back and forth to each other and giggling.

Playing sisters

I got to play a card game with Maisy yesterday.  She was totally into it!  We played open handed Go-Fish.  It was her first card game. Her patience is really increasing.

Going fish

Maren now has two teeth!  They came in pretty quickly and we had a couple of rough nights. We also started giving her baby snacks.  She's still not sure about them and can't get them into her mouth by herself, but will enjoy them and grab for more after she's given one.

First baby snack

She's a good baby sitter now.  She has rolled over, but doesn't do it regularly.  She isn't exactly scooting, but will move all around, mostly in circles and backwards.  She's really so grown up though!  I can't believe how fast the time is going.  She is still not sleeping through the night.  We are working on it though.  If she cries in the night I generally just give her a bottle of water while she's still in her crib or give her the pacifier.  This works 75% of the time.  The other times- she whines a bit then falls asleep then wakes up 30 minutes later crying again, where we start the process all over.  Some nights are better than others.

We had a great time dyeing Easter eggs this year.  Maisy was so gentle and really able to be trusted with the eggs.  She is so growing up. Yesterday and today she made her own sandwich for lunch (PB&J) using a knife and everything.  She's so proud of herself- and so are we!

Girls and their eggs

Easter was great.  The girls got up and the Easter Bunny had left very nice gifts for them and had hidden the eggs. Maisy was a master egg finder.  Uncle Steven came over for brunch and we pretty much just hung out all day and ate several courses of food and ended the day with some ham.

The best family photo we could get- we took about 10!

Today the girls had studies at UC Berkeley Infant Cognition and Language Lab. Both girls did wonderfully!  After the study we had a picnic on the UC Berkeley Campus and while we were sitting there, I remembered that there were dinosaur bones in the Valley of the Life Sciences Building, so I took them in there for a look at all the cool bones and fossils.

Not too much else planned for the end of the month.  We are very lucky to have Mimi and Papa J come visit us in just a little over a week. We are all looking forward to their visit- it's been too long!

Hope you are enjoying your spring.

Much love,

Maisy's First Day of Preschool

Maisy, Becky and Maren sending Maisy off

Today was Maisy’s first day at preschool at Griffin Nursery School. Right when she woke up this morning she was squealing in delight knowing that school was just around the corner. She did wonderfully! Todd, Maren and I went in to take a quick tour (Todd hadn’t previously seen the school). The second we walked in the door Maisy was off and getting into projects. She had a great day at school full of beading (she brought home a lovely necklace), painting and playing. She had no incidences with other kids and the teachers were all very impressed by her- knowing it was her first day and knowing her age. We are so proud of her. I didn’t out and out cry, but I welled up a good 5 times or so! I made sure to stay brave for Maisy! Not that she needed any bravery. As we were leaving and saying our goodbyes she simply looked up and said, “Goodbye, Mom, Goodbye, Dad.” When I was explaining to her when I was going to come and pick her up, she said that she wanted to stay all day and I didn’t need to come get her after lunch.

Maisy before we got in the car for school

After Maren and I arrived back home, she went down for a nap and I did some chores. With our free time after Maren woke up from her nap we went to visit baby Velia!

Amy and Maren

When Maisy got home and I asked her about her day. I got about two understandable sentences then she just shook her head in a circular motion, jabbered and made gestures like crazy, smiling the whole time. I’m guessing the day was slightly overwhelming with lots going on, but she managed it all very well! On the plus side, she’s very much looking forward to going back. She did say that she missed Maren, which I thought was very sweet.

We were lucky enough to have Papa J make the trip down from Tahoe to visit us tonight. The girls are thoroughly enjoying their time with him. They are all so cute together.

We’ve had a great day today! More later.

February flying by...

Maisy and Maren love

We’ve had a busy month. It seems we were always busy doing something. We were lucky enough to welcome two new friends to the world this year!

Little baby Velia was born Jan. 21 to our friends Amy and Paul. Maisy calls her “squishy baby Velia”. We’ve had the pleasure of seeing baby Velia a few times since her entrance into the world, the first few of many many play dates, I’m sure!

Becky and baby Velia cuddles

Baby Louisa was born Feb. 11 to our friends Alison and Maynard. She is wonderful, complete with a full head of hair! We look forward to seeing baby Louisa and big sister Mila a lot more after the family emerges from newborn land.

Maren meets baby Louisa

I just love meeting all of the new babies!

We were lucky enough to have Nana come visit to babysit while Todd and I went out for a night!

Todd and Becky all cleaned up for a night out

The next day Nana and I took the girls to the aquarium.

Nana and Maren

Maisy gave Nana a run for her money. Nana slept in Maisy’s double bed while Maisy was supposed to sleep in her sleeping bag and princess tent on the floor. This is where Maisy prefers to do most of her sleeping these days. The first night went okay, the next night Maisy kept Nana up all night having in depth conversations about the Lorax (which Nana had to read a bazillion times). The rest of the night was taken up with playing pillow and side of the bed swap. The next night Nana slept on the couch and everyone got a full night’s sleep.

Nana reading The Lorax- “Nana, but why was the Lorax sad? Where are his eyes? I like that trufula tree.”

Some of these pictures and stories may seem familiar because they were so cute at the time, I had to post them to Facebook. The reason I am re-posting to the blog is because at the end of the year, I turn our blog into a Shutterfly photobook to capture our memories. So if it doesn’t get blogged it doesn’t get commemorated. I’ve been horrible about filling in Maisy’s baby book. I don’t think I’ve touched it since she was 3 months old and poor Maren doesn’t even have a baby book. So here we are!

Maisy is growing and growing. She can now put on her own shoes, turn lights off and on, put on her own jacket, semi- get dressed and help unload the dishwasher. She is very good at picking up after herself. She is also very enthusiastic about hand washing! Maisy has started to write stories. Here is her first story.

“Once upon a time, I had fun with Evan and he came to my house and we played and had fun. Then we had lunch and I went home for nap.”

Maisy’s written story

Maisy and her story

Maisy loves being social. She often asks to visit friends, both her age and mine. We went to dinner with Satya and Shreyas the other night and Maisy and Satya went singing in the “rain” after dinner.

Maisy and Satya being silly

We are gearing up for Maisy to start her first day at school. Her first day will be next Friday. We got her a little owlie lunch bag and we are practicing packing it and eating lunch out of it. We went to the library and checked out as many books as we could find about school and Maisy has been requesting that we play school and I am the teacher. It’s pretty fun. She is very much looking forward to it. I’m really looking forward to seeing her blossom and also to getting a bit more time to spend one on one with Maren.

Maisy loves being a big sister and Maren is fascinated and thoroughly entertained by Maisy. Maisy sometimes shows too much love and gets a bit too excited, but Maren is a tough cookie and handles most of it with a great deal of grace.

Maren is 6 months old. I cannot even believe that much time has passed since she was born. I still think of her as a newborn, then we see her next to real newborns and she seems giant sized!

Maren and Sophie

Maren is strong and close to sitting on her own. She can for a bit, then she starts leaning and leaning and leaning and pretty soon she’s on her way over. She isn’t scooting or rolling over yet. She had her 6 mo appointment today and I asked the doctor about that. After watching Maren in action, she says she’s completely capable of those activities, she simply just doesn’t want to, so she says not to worry. We haven’t yet started feeding her solids but will next week. She now weighs 15 lbs 3 oz and is 26 inches long. Poor baby got her shots today and she was not too happy about it. She cried big tears and let out big wails. Broke my heart again! She’s currently sleeping and mending.

Maren resting after shots

Maren is still waking up once to twice a night (typically) for feeds. I’m looking forward to the day of real sleeping through the night because I have yet to find the right amount of coffee to actually feel completely awake and alert!

We have quite a bit of travel coming up. This weekend we are heading back up to Tahoe to hang out with Mimi, Papa J and Uncle Steven in the snow. Mid March I am taking the girls down to LA on a plane ride alone! (I feel this is a crazy idea- we’ll soon find out exactly HOW crazy it is). We are going down for dress fittings, wedding dress shopping and wedding planning for my sister’s wedding. Then at the end of March we are headed up to Portland to visit friend, family, my dad and to attend my aunt and uncle’s 50th wedding anniversary. Whew! Busy busy month. We plan to lay low in April!

More in a few weeks!

Much love, Todd, Becky, Maisy and Maren

The snow in January

First snow day as a family of four!

The year is just moving along. It’s hard to believe that January is already gone. We’ve had quite a busy month with touring preschools and preparing for the snow. We took a trip up to Tahoe with a group of friends to get some snow time in. The kids all had a great time together and on the way home Maisy kept asking if all her friends could come over to sleep at our house.

Maisy tried mini skis and did very well and giggled the whole time, but quickly said, “I’m done.”

Maisy’s first ski

Maren slept through most of the snow activities, mostly because she was sooo cozy and getting rocked right to sleep. I got an amazing work out carrying her around!

Ready for snow!

Snow play

There are just too many cute pictures to post, but I’ll put in just a couple more anyway!

Snowy blue eyes

Dad and sled rides

We will be returning to the snow next month with Mimi and Papa J, I’m sure they can convince her to get a few more runs in. Getting to Tahoe was lovely as was the company once we arrived. Getting home was a looong day. Traffic was back up for hours. We pulled over to comfort the girls and let them stretch out a bit and out of the blue, Uncle Steven pulls up next to us! He had also been returning from Tahoe- but neither of us knew the other was up. Due to the horrible traffic we stopped for some pizza altogether.

Maisy was very sweet in trying to calm Maren down on the ride home singing Twinkle Twinkle Little Star (incorrectly) but with ever so much sweetness and heart.

It’s been a fun month with lots of little projects. Maisy helped Todd bake cookies.

Bakers

Maisy made a huge painting on a large piece of corrugated paper. She LOVED it.

Painter

Maisy has come up with her own accent. No idea where it has come from. So now Daddy sounds like, Dey-ah-dey, That sound like They-at, There sounds like They-er. It’s quite amusing. She has also been very interested in ballet lately. She wears ballet shoes all over the house practicing her pirouettes. She requests “ballet music” and puts on her leotard and twirls about most afternoons. She even requests to sleep in her ballet shoes. She is also quite the conversationalist asking questions like, “How was your day? And what do you do?”. Her sense of humor is also starting to develop which is also very amusing.

Maisy is excited to begin school in the fall. She will be going to Griffin Nursery School 3 mornings a week. The good part is that the teacher was impressed with her and loved her spirit for adventure, so they are willing to take her early! Maisy will start going one day a week on Fridays. http://www.griffinnurseryschool.org/

Maren is already 5 months old! She is growing so fast. I told her today, just to slow down a bit. It’s hard to believe that soon she’ll be walking around. I just want to keep her so sweet and cuddly!

Maren being cute

Maren still has not rolled over again, but has found her voice. She loves squealing in delight. She and Maisy have squealing conversations. It’s really cute for about 60 seconds and then it gets a little loud sounding! We have started giving Maren a sippy cup with water in it and she seems to get putting it in her mouth. She’s still not sure of the water inside though. We practice sitting up, but no sitting independently yet. Last week we also started “brushing her teeth”, stopped swaddling her and started giving her a little square monkey blanket to sleep with for comfort. She is doing well with it and is still waking just 2 times a night. I’m definitely looking forward to getting that down to zero! We’ve moved her feedings to first in the good night routine, so hopefully she’ll just learn to fall asleep totally on her own without needing a feeding to make her feel sleepy. She’s just a very sweet, happy, smiley and easy going baby.
